Job description
Position
We are seeking a qualified candidate who is interested in corporate social responsibility to explore the impact of environmental regulation of industry on environmental and business outcomes. The ultimate objective of environmental regulation is the prevention and reduction of environmental harm from pollution, habitat loss or resource depletion. The effectiveness of regulations to mitigate harm from industrial emissions and resource depletion must be assessed to ascertain if policy instruments and their enforcement are achieving the target objectives.
Environmental regulation can have significant potential impacts on the financial performance of businesses as well as the environmental performance of industrial sectors. National and international agencies argue that an integrated approach is required to protect the environment and the economy. International competitiveness and barriers to investment in cleaner technologies influence the capacity of businesses to respond and are often considered in the stringency of environmental regulation. Therefore, to assess the success of environmental regulation on industry a complete understanding of the impact of environmental regulation on environmental and business outcomes is required.
This position presents a unique opportunity for the successful PhD candidate to assess the impact of environmental regulations on business outcomes and environmental outcomes. The project will involve quantitative analysis using secondary data sources (e.g. national and international) as well as primary data collection methods.
The successful PhD candidate will:
Conduct a specified programme of research under the supervision and direction of an interdisciplinary research supervision team;
Engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities as required by an interdisciplinary research supervision team in order to develop research skills and competencies;
Research and report on existing literature and best practice cases from other jurisdictions;
Research and report innovative solutions for measuring environmental and business outcomes from environmental regulation and enforcement;
Gather primary data using survey research methods;
Meet and engage with various stakeholders;
Perform detailed econometric/statistical analysis to assess whether internationally recognised metrics of environmental enforcement significantly altered the environmental and financial performance of regulated firms;
Engage in dissemination activities;
Become familiar with the publication process;
Engage in wider research and scholarly activities.
Interdisciplinary Supervision Team
The proposed research involves the integration of environmental, business, economic and accounting information. The interdisciplinary supervisory team contains staff members from the Department of Economics (Dr. Power, Dr. Eakins, Dr. O’Connor and Prof. Doyle) and the Department of Accounting and Finance (Dr. Ryan). These staff members are working on funded research projects in the field of environmental economics. Dr. Power and Prof. Doyle are business economists and Dr. Eakins is an environmental economist. Dr. O' Connor has a background in life-sciences and statistics. Dr. Ryan is a financial economist but also has published many papers on eco-innovation. She is also Principal investigator on a H2020 research project sponsored by Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks on multi-sectoral approaches to innovative skills training for renewable energy and social acceptance. The team members have all worked on EPA-funded projects. The team currently has a research fellow (Dr. O’Connor), a senior post-doctoral researcher and a PhD student working on various funded research projects in this area funded by the EPA, the SEAI and the H2020 Mistral ITN Network.
