Doctoral candidate (PhD student) in Molecular, Organellar and Cellular Quality Control in Parkinson’s Disease and Other Neurodegenerative Diseases
The PARK-QC Doctoral Training Unit at the University of Luxembourg, involving the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine, the Life Sciences Research Unit, the Luxembourg Institute of Health, the Integrated Biobank of Luxembourg funded under the PRIDE scheme of the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR), invites applications for 12 PhD positions.
Contract type:
Student and employee status (36 months studies programme ,full-time (40h/week) as per university standards)
Initial 14 months fixed-term contract, renewable depending on thesis progress evaluation. Project funding available for up to 48 months
Start date: earliest 4th quarter of 2018
Ref.: R-AGR-3389-10-C (DTU Park-QC PRIDE)
Research area:
The PARK-QC Doctoral Training Unit will focus on an interdisciplinary approach to investigate the functional network of molecular, organellar and cellular quality control pathways in the development of neurodegenerative diseases by dissecting the underlying pathological mechanisms. The strength of network-based approaches offers the possibility of integrating newly identified genetic perturbations of the surveillance machinery via cutting-edge gene-editing technologies, thereby allowing improvement of our animal- and cell-based models introducing ageing-related effects. Within this innovative approach, we integrate additional genetic risk variants to established monogenic disease and thereby increase the effect of genes on phenotypes more than the sum of their individual contributions as drug targets. Induced pluripotent stem cell derived neuronal models will be applied to innovative automated cell culture and compound screening platforms and application of advanced machine-learning algorithms will allow identification of associated biomarkers of disease in order to find novel approaches to improve diagnosis and treatments. An integral part of this DTU will be the development of novel protective therapeutic strategies.
The training programme focuses on the following research topics:
Development of advanced disease models addressing different aspects of molecular, organellar and cellular quality control in neurodegeneration;
Identification and integration of molecular mechanisms into networks applying state-of-the-art omics, single-cell and computational modelling technologies;
Integrating molecular and cellular signatures into network-based modelling approaches to identify biomarkers for neurodegeneration;
Development of experimental readouts to conceptualize novel neuroprotective treatments based on genetic and pharmacological screening.
A Master degree or equivalent in Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, or related discipline
Strong interest in interdisciplinary research and cellular models of neurodegeneration
