A doctoral position in mathematics / computational biology / computer science and related areas is available in Steffen Klamt’s group at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg (Germany). Our group develops and applies methods and algorithms for the mathematical modeling and targeted modification of biological networks. One particular focus is the application of computational and model-driven approaches for the rational metabolic engineering of microorganisms to optimize biotechnological processes.
For a larger research project, which is funded by the European Research Council (ERC) and combines innovative computational and experimental techniques to establish a new design principle for engineering microbial cell factories, we are looking for a talented doctoral student willing to work in an interdisciplinary team. The candidate should have an excellent degree or/and experience in one or several of the following fields:
Mathematics / Biomathematics
Informatics / Bioinformatics / Computational biology
Systems biology / Metabolic engineering
Physics
Experiences in the following areas are of particular advantage (but no explicit requirement):
mathematical modeling of metabolic networks (e.g., kinetic or constraint-based modeling), computational strain design, model-based metabolic engineering
theory and algorithms of mathematical optimization; in particular, linear and mixed-integer linear programming (LP / MILP)
programming in MATLAB; experience with CPLEX or/and JAVA
Some basic biological knowledge or/and experiences in working in interdisciplinary projects would be a plus but are not mandatory.
The Max Planck Institute and our group offer excellent research opportunities in a stimulating and friendly environment. Salary and benefits are commensurate with TVöD-Bund. The position is available from May 2017 (later starting date would be possible), initially for two years with the possibility of an extension. The Max Planck Society is committed to increasing the representation of women and persons with physical disabilities. We particularly encourage such individuals to apply.
There is no strict deadline and the call is open until the position is filled. Applicants should prepare a single PDF file containing an application letter, CV, certificates, a short statement of research interests, a brief description of scientific achievements (if applicable), and, if possible, contact information for two references. This PDF file should be send to
klamt@mpi-magdeburg.mpg.de as soon as possible.
